Page 1 — Cover
Night. A neon-lit apartment above a city. John sits at a desk in his wheelchair, one hand flat on a padded envelope; a USB drive, a laptop and a cold mug sit beside it. In the doorway behind him Maya stands backlit in pink, one hand resting on her pregnant belly. Neither of them is looking at the other.
man.bat — Issue 01: NO OVERRIDE
Page 2 — Thirty-six hours ahead
A woman with a blonde bob sits at a kitchen table. Her laptop reads RETURN IN PROGRESS. Her phone lights up on the table: CALEB WREN.
Wren You have no idea what you released.
Sloane Neither do you.
A corner office. Wren stands before a wall of screens listing case numbers.
Wren Stop it.
Close on the USB drive seated in the laptop.
Sloane There is no stop.
THIRTY-SIX HOURS EARLIER.
Page 3 — The public face of useful work
A charity gala under chandeliers. John, in his wheelchair, and Maya, pregnant in a purple gown, are on stage in front of an applauding room.
Two years and eight months after I retired a ghost, Maya and I became the public face of useful work.
We were married. She was six months pregnant. People trusted us with their hope.
I had love, purpose, and enough public redemption to make a lesser liar comfortable.
Page 4 — Then I saved
Home, later. Maya sits on the arm of the sofa while John loosens his tie.
Maya Happy?
John Objectively.
Maya Dangerous adverb.
The world kept producing people who followed every rule and were punished for expecting the rules to matter.
I only read.
Night. Maya asleep beside him; John lit by his phone.
Then I saved.
He scrolls a feed of ruined people — a man carrying a box out of an office, a woman with her head in her hands, a nurse, an older man on a step. He bookmarks one.
SLOANE: VerityShield manufactured guilt for clients who could afford certainty. I refused to sign one more lie. They used my credentials, called me the architect, and buried me beneath the machine I helped build.
Page 5 — She had also lied
John works a desk crowded with monitors and paper.
Most stories fracture under attention.
Hers became sharper.
A timeline resolves on screen; faces and documents line up behind hers.
She had been framed.
Drawer after drawer of stamped, certified files, each carrying her photograph.
She had also lied.
Not about what they did to her. About how long she helped them do it to everyone else.
Page 6 — Measuring the frame out loud
The kitchen table. John pushes a folder across it. Maya, in tinted glasses, does not pick it up.
John What if I build the tool, but the person they destroyed chooses the consequence?
Maya Then you choose who gets to choose.
John I verify the facts. I give them options. I leave.
Maya You promised to tell me before you built another door.
John This is me telling you.
Maya No. This is you measuring the frame out loud.
Page 7 — A man hiding in punctuation
No voice. No fake conscience. No fatigue bypass. No machine pretending to refuse me.
A terminal window, empty except for two words.
man.bat
Maya Batman backward?
John A .bat file is a batch file. Instructions executed in order.
John No ghost. No hero. A man and a tool. The recipient decides whether it runs.
The two of them, close, not quite facing each other.
Maya A man hiding in punctuation.
Page 8 — The package
John assembles the package by lamplight: a padded envelope, printed pages, the drive.
The facts include what they did to you and what you did for them.
Use the drive. Destroy it. Or report this package.
Use is voluntary. The decision will be yours.
I removed every mechanism that could act without her.
He posts the envelope into a street mailbox in the rain.
I also removed every mechanism that could stop her.
Page 9 — All of me
Sloane comes home and finds the envelope inside her door. She reads at the kitchen table.
WREN-ORDERED ALTERATIONS VERIFIED: 312
SLOANE BECKETT PARTICIPATION VERIFIED: 19
Sloane You found me.
She holds the small black drive flat in her palm.
Sloane All of me.
Page 10 — Three doors
The tool offers her three options, one at a time.
CLEAR — Correct your record. Apply private pressure. Protect every other file.
CUT — Expose Wren and the senior architects. Shield lower-authority analysts and your earlier work.
RETURN — Deliver each verified history to its adult subject and lawful reviewers. Include every person who altered it.
THERE IS NO OVERRIDE. THIS CHOICE CANNOT BE RECALLED BY THE SENDER.
Page 11 — Return all of it
Memory: Wren standing behind Sloane at her desk.
Wren You were not asked whether it was true.
Wren You were asked whether it was defensible.
I told myself I only arranged what powerful people had already decided.
A prompt waits on her laptop.
INCLUDE SLOANE BECKETT PARTICIPATION? — YES
Sloane Return all of it.
Page 12 — It returned to the people
The truth did not leak.
Strangers all over the city read on phones and laptops.
It returned to the people who had been forced to live inside it.
A lawyer at a desk compares a printed file with the restored one on screen.
Sloane watches her own record open, labelled SUBJECT / ANALYST.
The first name it cleared was hers.
A grid of her own ID photographs fills the screen.
The second name it accused was also hers.
Page 13 — Recipient authority: active
John at a wall of monitors, watching it spread.
John Stop.
RECIPIENT AUTHORITY: ACTIVE — SENDER OVERRIDE: NONE
I had made her choice real.
Maya in the doorway behind him.
Maya You built something you could not stop on purpose?
John It was not my choice.
Maya You chose that sentence first.
Page 14 — I am the board
A boardroom emptying out. Wren points at the door.
Wren Kill the archive. Revoke every internal credential. Now.
Administrator The board preservation order—
Wren I am the board.
A hand presses a red control. The system answers.
DESTRUCTION ATTEMPT RECORDED — RECEIPT RETURNED TO AFFECTED SUBJECTS
Wren tried to erase the evidence. Sloane had counted on it.
Page 15 — With my hands
A phone call, cut between his boardroom and her kitchen.
Wren Tell them you fabricated everything. I can contain the rest.
Sloane I did fabricate some of it.
Wren Under instruction.
Sloane Under your instruction. With my hands.
Wren We both signed.
Sloane That is why both names went out. I did not ask the file to forgive me.
Page 16 — Files become people again
The board turns on Wren. Security waits in the corridor. Someone packs his office into a box while his own recorded face plays on the wall screen.
He had made a career turning people into files.
Sloane made him watch the files become people again.
Page 17 — Her accountability began
VERITYSHIELD BOARD REMOVES FOUNDER; CRIMINAL REVIEW OPENED
Wren leaves the building through a crowd of cameras, carrying a box.
MANUFACTURED CREDIBILITY FINDINGS SUSPENDED
A long table of reviewers works through the restored files. A sealed folder waits under someone's hand.
The case against her ended.
Sloane walks into a hearing room and stands before the panel.
Her accountability began.
Page 18 — Would you have?
Daylight, a quiet street. John reaches from his wheelchair into a mailbox and takes out a returned envelope.
Inside: the USB drive, smashed to pieces, and a handwritten note.
Choice was mine. Conditions were yours.
I chose a consequence that included me.
Would you have?
John sits with the note, and does not have an answer.
Page 19 — I will not live inside your grammar
Three cards propped on the desk: ADAPTATION, DENIABILITY, HARM.
Maya Did you give her free will?
John Yes.
Maya Or did you make her carry your appetite?
John Both.
Maya I can live with the truth.
I will not live inside your grammar.
Page 20 — The rules
John pins up a card headed CHOICE and writes beneath it.
RULE 1: VERIFY THE INJURY.
RULE 2: VERIFY THE RECIPIENT.
RULE 3: SEND BOTH TRUTHS.
RULE 4: NO OVERRIDE.
Maya Rules are not innocence.
John No.
He turns a screen towards her. A new file is open — another face, another record.
Maya Tell me what you know.
Page 21 — End of Issue 01
phreak_luser made my choices sound like someone else's.
The terminal again.
man.bat
This time, someone else would choose.
His hands square a fresh sheet of paper. A new drive. A new envelope.
The distinction was real.
So was the lie.
The envelope goes into the post box. The city keeps burning its neon.
RECIPIENT AUTHORITY: PENDING
SENDER OVERRIDE: NONE
RESPONSIBILITY: NOT
